Desperate Cravings

Have you ever been to one of those huge buffet restaurants where the selection of food is just overwhelming? They have a seemingly unending line of salads, vegetables, meats and desserts. Oh, the desserts…every kind of cake, pie, cookie, ice cream and decadent sugary tidbit imaginable.

Just sitting and watching the people in those food lines is a lesson in sociology, psychology and every other -ology you can think of!

We like to feed ourselves a lot of things that we don’t need, aren’t good for us and can cause permanent harm to our bodies. Sometimes we dig our own graves with our forks.

I have noticed another buffet of late and so many people with a desperate craving for what this buffet has to offer. It is the buffet of new and trendy movements within the Church. They are not satisfied with the meat of the Word of God. The Bible and the instructions for life within its pages are not enough. They need more. More what? More excitement? More feelings? More emotional and physical response?

Desperate cravings of the soul can be satisfied by only one thing and that is the shed blood of Jesus Christ.

Faith in Jesus Christ and the indwelling of the Holy Spirit fills the soul and brings peace.

And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:7

There is no chaos, no confusion, no foolishness in Christ.

Let all things be done decently and in order. 1 Corinthians 14:40

I write this today as a warning. My friends, try the spirits. Just because an activity or teaching occurs within a church does not mean it is of God.

Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 1 John 4:1

Jesus warned us over and over again to guard ourselves against deceit.

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. Ye shall know them by their fruits. Matthew 7:15-16

And what are the fruits that Jesus spoke about?

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.  Galatians 5:22-23 (NIV)

The Holy Spirit produces good fruit. Carefully examine each of the fruits and ask the question, does this activity or behavior produce these fruits?

Let everything pass the scripture test. If an activity, a movement, a trend in your church does not pass the scripture test, pass it by. Wolves will twist a tidbit of scripture to fit their agenda, but the whole counsel of God will prove out false teaching.

Satan is seductive. He is deceptive and he will beguile you just as he beguiled Eve in the garden of Eden.

Heed the words of Apostle Paul:

Be not carried about by diverse and strange doctrines. Hebrews 13:9 (NIV)

Get into the Word of God. Open the Bible and search out the scriptures. The Word of God will never fail you.

There is no new gospel and there will never be a new gospel. The words that were written thousands of years ago stand true today. They do not change and they never will. While man will twist and manipulate the Word of God, His Word will stand forever.

Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. Jeremiah 6:16

I leave you with one final scripture today.

Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. 1 Corinthians 15:58

May God bless and keep you, my friends. If I don’t meet you again here, I hope to meet you over there.

  1. You are so right. When I go to a new restaurant I usually order a salad and combo appetizer. That gives me a nice, filling meal and a taste of what they have to offer. I tend to do the same with churches. I sample what they have to offer. Then I go home and dig in the scriptures myself. I enjoy hearing different teachers and evangelists. It encourages me to look at the scriptures with different perspectives.
